The Hands

The very first artists were ancestors who stenciled their hands on the walls of prehistoric caves around the globe. The finest examples can be found in Cueva de las Manos (The Cave of Hands) in Argentine Patagonia. The oldest of these hands was discovered in the Maltravieso cave in Cáceres, Spain, and is thought to be some 64,000 years old. From Argentina and Spain to France, Australia, Indonesia, and even the United States, the discovery of these hands on walls has made us wonder about the role of artists in human evolution.
